President’s Message
Recently, along with nine other members of the executive board, I had the opportunity to listen to Jon Gordon speak. His message was so clear and concise, his ideas so simple and pure. He spoke with passion about understanding what you stand for and the importance of basing your decisions off of that understanding. He stressed the importance of caring for, loving, and serving others. In the end, everything pointed towards being a positive leader and understanding the impact of that leadership. The message is so powerful and so simple, but often times hard to do.
When hearing powerful speakers such as Jon Gordon, it is natural to reflect on how you lead. It’s easy to question if you do too much, not enough, or if you are actually leading at all. With enough questioning doubt will creep in, which only leads to further questioning, followed by more doubt; the cycle can be suffocating. I am certain every leader has experienced this at some point, on some level.
During these times it is important to get back the most basic of ideas, to think simple, be genuine with yourself, and ask one simple question.
What do I stand for?
Of all the points Mr. Gordon made during his speech, one statement resonated within me stronger than others.
“Once you know what you stand for every decision becomes easy.”
- Jon Gordon
When hearing this, I first applied it to my family. I then considered my golf program. And finally, after looking at the fine people I was sharing the table with, some of my closest friends, my mind settled on our association.
In my mind, as an association, we stand for opportunity. Opportunity for coaches to improve, grow, and network through our spring and summer clinics. Opportunity to recognize the excellence within our student athletes through our all-state, academic all-state, and scholarship programs. Opportunity for our student athletes to find that perfect college match through our College Showcase. Opportunity to pay respect to the great coaches we have worked with and competed against through our Hall of Fame and Distinguished Service awards. And lastly, the opportunity to recognize the courses and people that help make it all possible through our Friend of Golf award.
As a board, we will continue to make decisions and center discussions around the opportunities we can provide to our membership. It is my hope we continue to see our membership grow, and eventually, every coach in the state takes advantage of what we offer.
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize our WIAA Girls Golf State Champions. Coach John Sams and his Kettle Moraine Lasers won the two day WIAA State Tournament by 8 strokes over Middleton (Coach Becky Halverson), earning their first girls golf state championship in school history. In division two, Coach Peggy Gierhart of Edgewood brought home the 14th gold trophy for the Crusaders as they cruised to a 60 shot victory over second place Xavier (Coach Jason Haen).
On the individual side, division one champion, Jo Baranczyk of Bay Port (Coach Jeff Johnson), birdied the par 4 fourth, her last hole, to avoid a playoff with Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead (Coach Mike Breaker). And the division two state champion, Clair Phakamad of Xavier (Coach Jason Haen) came back from four strokes back after day one, by firing a 74 and edged out Annie Balduzzi of Aquinas (Coach Andy Foley) to capture her state title.
I would also like to congratulate all of our All-State, Academic All-State, Team Academic All-State, and scholarship winners. Your hard work and dedication to all things great about student athletes, golf, and Wisconsin do not go unnoticed.
Enjoy your offseason.
