Volume XXXI Issue #1

The board members of the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin are pleased to present the 2018 Spring Issue of The Coach Approach. In this issue you will find the following:

President’s Message

The 2018 Boy’s Season is finally underway! It sure took a while, but it’s great to be back out on the course again. Back on March 24th we kicked off 2018 with the annual GCAW Spring Clinic. Due to some scheduling difficulties with The Kohl Center, we returned to University Ridge for the clinic and had record attendance. We were extremely happy with the turnout this year as we were at full capacity with 120 high school coaches in attendance. Thank you to all of those who attended. The engagement level and dialogue of those in attendance was once again outstanding. You are all extremely dedicated and passionate coaches. Thank you again for your participation. Also thank you to Brian Scrobel and Brandy Johnston for their efforts in organizing this spring clinic.

We were thrilled this year to have 2017 & 2018 PGA WI Teacher of the Year David Roesch speak to us. He gave us a lot of great ideas for drills to do with our players. We really appreciated his time in sharing his expertise with us. It was also nice to have Tom Shafranski there to go over some of the key points from this years rules video. Those in attendance were given credit for their WIAA golf meeting. The clinic program this year once again included an incredibly thorough, educational and entertaining rules seminar by Bill Linnemann of the WSGA. It is easy to see why Bill is one of the most respected USGA Rules Officials in the country. Thank you Bill! It was also nice to have Andy Landenberger from the WPGA at the spring clinic to go through their offerings for junior golf in Wisconsin. Andy also indicated that they would like to help out with more high school tournaments so to reach out to him if you are hosting a tournament and would like his help with running it. Thanks Andy!

The GCAW’s lineup of educational events culminates this June with the 32nd Annual Summer Clinic on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 19th and 20th. You will see registration information in this edition for that event. The board is truly excited about bringing the Summer Clinic back to Wild Rock GC in Wisconsin Dells this year. The registration deadline is Friday, June 2nd. To those coaches who have not attended either the spring clinic of summer clinic the past couple years, I strongly encourage to do so. The educational programming along with the venues and ability to network with and learn from your fellow coaches has never been better.

And last but certainly not least, let’s not forget the GCAW College Showcase to be held on Sunday and Monday, July 8th and 9th. Registration is now open for your players and information is included in the edition. Again, this is a great opportunity for your players to showcase their talents for college coaches and learn about the recruiting process at the same time.

Good luck to everyone this season!

College Showcase

The purpose of the College Showcase Tournament is to bring golf recruits and college coaches together.  The 2018 Showcase Tournament is open to all Wisconsin WIAA golfers (including classes of 2018 – 2022) and provides a unique opportunity to have their games evaluated by college golf coaches at every level.  For the golf coaches, the Showcase Tournament allows them to efficiently recruit multiple golfers and focus their evaluations on specific players and golf skills that they feel are most important to their program.

The GCAW College Showcase draws college coaches from as far away as Ohio and Kansas.  In total 48 D1, D2, D3 and NAIA programs were at the 2016 event, in addition to several scouts for national recruiting organizations.

The 2018 college showcase will be held July 8 and 9, 2018. This year the showcase will be a two day, 36 hole event.

GCAW Scholarship

FOR SENIORS WHO ARE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL in 2018

The Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin is offering scholarships to Wisconsin high school female golfers and Wisconsin high school male golfers. Depending on the applications we receive, our hope is to award one female and one male our top scholarship, both in the amount of $1000. We also hope to award at least one female and one male a $750 runner-up scholarship, and may also opt to award additional runner-up scholarships ($500), again, depending on the decisions of the committee and the association board.

GCAW Team Academic All-State

The Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin (GCAW) recently announced its 7th annual “Team Academic All-State” award. This recognition was established to acknowledge high school golf teams with the highest ‘team’ grade point averages (‘team’ is defined as the five designated golfers on the roster at the fall 2017 WIAA regional tournament). The three teams with the highest cumulative team GPA in each division (D1- D2) were recognized with gold, silver, or bronze medals for each student-athlete, and their schools received a certificate to note this accomplishment. Schools with at least a 3.25 team GPA received a certificate acknowledging honorable mention status. The coaches association salutes the outstanding academic performance of our student-athletes.

This year’s honorees in each division were as follows:
D1: Brookfield Central-1st, Pulaski-2nd, and Appleton East-3nd.
D2: St. Croix Central-1st, Cochrane/Fountain City-2nd, and Denmark-3rd.

The complete list, including those schools receiving ‘honorable mention’ recognition can be found on the GCAW website at https://golfcoacheswi.org/girls-team-academic-all-state/
